Election Address from Labour

Born and brought up in Cardiff and the Vale; I know this area, its people and its problems. A campaigner for fairness and justice all my life, I won’t stand idly by and watch the Tories and Lib Dems destroy our communities and wreck our economy.

If elected I’ll:

  • Fight the massive Tory/Lib Dem cuts to police numbers;
  • Campaign for more local jobs through policies like the Welsh Labour Government’s jobs scheme for young people;
  • Push for fairer energy prices, and a new watchdog to force companies to pass on price cuts;
  • Campaign against Tory/Lib Dem plans to pay Welsh workers less;
  • Fight to get the best deal for local pensioners.

I’ve spoke to thousands of people across the constituency in the last few months, and the same things keep coming up, time and time again: concern about the impact of cuts to police numbers to the future of local communities, jobs and job security, the rising cost of living, and cuts to support for vulnerable people like the disabled.

My campaign has been about the issues that matter to the people and communities across this constituency, underpinned by my values of fairness and social justice.

Too many of families that I’ve met, already struggling with spiralling costs fear that the energy price hike is a step too far. I am angry when I meet families who are doing the right thing, but are being hit by cuts and price rises while the Tories and Lib Dems give tax breaks to millionaires, and major corporations and bankers don’t pay their fair share.

There are too many people worried about what cuts to police will mean for the future of their communities and their children; too many families living on the brink, too many young people facing a life on benefits because this Tory/Lib Dem government is taking away their chance for a job and a better future.

I’m on the side of ordinary people and families in Cardiff and Penarth, I’ll stand up to the Tories and Lib Dems in Westminster and work with the Welsh Labour government in Cardiff Bay to deliver for this area.

On Thursday 15th November, the people of Cardiff South and Penarth will have the opportunity to send a clear message to Cameron and Clegg. The Tories and Lib Dems have let down the people of Cardiff South and Penarth – vote Labour on polling day and let them know that we simply can’t go on like this.

This election address was written by Stephen Doughty, Labour Party candidate in the Penarth and Cardiff South by-election.
